The Healthy Step Podiatry team uses two different types of lasers to deliver effective, painless treatments for healthier, more comfortable feet. The first laser they use is the Aerolase® laser to treat onychomycosis and nail fungus. Most conventional treatments for nail fungus — including over-the-counter and prescription medications — can take months to work, if they work at all.
With the Aerolase, the Healthy Step team can eliminate nail fungus in just a few months, rather than the usual 6-12 months. Repeat sessions may be needed on a monthly basis until you see results and your nails begin to clear up.
The Aerolase laser can also be used to reduce the appearance of scars. This can be helpful if you’ve experienced trauma or surgery on your feet and want to restore a more natural and cosmetically appealing appearance to your toes, feet, or ankles.
The second laser, called the MLS Therapy Laser, is used to reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation after trauma, surgery, and sports injuries. Since it’s classified as a cold laser, you don’t feel any heat or discomfort during the treatment and can see results within a single visit, in some cases.
While both available lasers use different light wave frequencies to target specific issues, general laser treatment works by emitting light energy into the tissues under your skin to trigger different cellular processes. The lasers used at Healthy Step Podiatry penetrate deep enough to reach muscles, ligaments, and tendons within your feet and ankles without damaging tissues, like a surgical laser.
As your cells absorb the light energy, they use it to initiate cell turnover and healing. This reduces pain and inflammation and can also trigger your immune system to fight off fungal infections.
Laser treatments are painless and generally take fewer than 10 minutes per session. Before your session, your provider gives you protective eyeglasses to wear to block the laser from irritating your eyes. Your provider then places the handheld device against your skin and pulses the laser on and off.
Your provider moves the handheld device slowly over the entire treatment area until your treatment is complete. You may feel mild warmth when the laser is turned on, though the sensation is brief.
Afterward, you can return to your normal activities without any downtime. You may need additional sessions, depending on your condition.
